About our ProgramWho is Crime Stoppers of Minnesota? Crime Stoppers of Minnesota is organized as separate and independent from law enforcement for the purpose of gathering information about crimes that may not otherwise be available to authorities but can help to solve crimes. This method of collecting information while keeping tipsters anonymous and paying a reward has been in successful operation for over 30 years.
Our Organization Crime Stoppers of Minnesota is a non - profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1979. In 2009 the name and the scope of the organization was changed from Crime Stoppers Inc. to Crime Stoppers of Minnesota as it now serves people and Law Enforcement in the entire State of Minnesota.
Crime Stoppers provides an alternative to silence, and an option to direct contact with law enforcement to report crime information. This has proven very effective as there are now over 500 local Crime Stoppers organizations across the United States and more than 1200 around the world. All are locally based organizations that rely on support from the community so that we can provide coordination with law enforcement and the building of awareness by the media.
Crime Stoppers of Minnesota is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and relies on donations to sustain its continued operation. Supporters of Crime Stoppers can donate funds to join the fight against crime at the Support Us button on this website.
The Alternative Provided by Crime Stoppers Crime Stoppers is successful because it is effective in combating fear and apathy. The fact that tipsters are anonymous removes the fear that somebody will discover they have provided information to law enforcement. This important facet of confidentiality means that useful information can be provided and tipsters do not have to worry about reprisals from their associates, family, or neighborhood because they did the ‘right thing’ by coming forward. We lessen the apathy of not wanting to ‘get involved’, but instead encourage people to ‘do the right thing’ to help remedy a bad situation….solve a crime and help bring resolution to a victim.
A Proven Program Since the first Crime Stoppers organization was formed, over $8 Billion in property and drugs has been recovered across the USA. Our continued presence over 30 plus years is solid testimony that this program works to benefit the community and law enforcement. It is able to help take criminals off the streets and give communities back an increased sense of wellbeing and safety.
One Crime Stoppers organization estimates that a tip is worth 100 hours of an investigators’ time. In the economic times of today agency budgets are tight and staffs are asked to do more with what they have. Crime Stoppers is recognized by Law Enforcement agencies across the State as an additional tool that helps them.
Your Support at Work The Crime Stoppers of Minnesota program is funded by private donations and fundraising efforts. Our volunteer Board of Directors includes persons from throughout the State who provide direction on financial and operational activities. The Board meets regularly to evaluate tips and to decide on the size of rewards to be paid. Rewards are then distributed in a private manner to the tipsters. Even though tipsters are eligible for rewards up to $1,000, many choose not to collect their rewards knowing they have helped their friends, neighbors, and community for the better.
